He made chicken and dumplings. She made matzoh ball soup. And whatever it was that happened when my stepdad, Ron Davidson, met my mom, something was always cooking, and it always tasted right. ⠀ They were co-workers when he said he could sure use the vacuum cleaner she no longer needed. ⠀ A few dates later, she realized he had hardwood floors. ⠀ He also had a tabby named Gizmo, and when Ron moved in with us, he brought that kitten, and a whole bunch of music, not just the horn section from his band which rehearsed in our living room, but also a stack of records, the Motown groups with whom he had played. His stack joined my mom’s, Carole King and Neil Diamond leaning up against The Four Tops, Ashford & Simpson. ⠀ She told me, in hushed tones, that police would pull him over when he was young, traveling with his band, make him play his trumpet to prove he owned it. She had stories, too, her uncle shot dead in front of his brothers on a doorstep in Europe before the war. ⠀ Where my mother was the queen of doom, Ron was a warm breeze, an Isley Brothers tune from one of his records, playing on a Sunday afternoon, Gizmo asleep in a patch of light. ⠀ He stepped into the tension and loneliness that was our household and transformed it. He brought the Earth to our Wind and Fire. ⠀ He danced at bar mitzvahs, and she danced at family barbecues. Before Ron, I can’t remember seeing her dance, not ever. ⠀ Once, she was driving, singing along to the radio, and as a teenager I announced, “Mom, I hate to break this to you, but your voice is terrible.” ⠀ And she said, “Ron thinks I have a nice voice,” and kept on singing, turning up the music, fa-la-la. I hope they have Auto-Tune in heaven. Or poor Gizmo has to listen to that shit. ⠀ That’s where they are now & I like to think they’re floating on a raft in a pool, and he’s already heading toward the edge because he knows she’ll be wanting another drink, knows it before she does, like he always grabs a sweater on the way out the door, because he knows she’ll be cold after dark. ⠀ 53 years ago today, the Supreme Court made interracial marriage legal when Mildred & Richard Loving won their case. ⠀ Happy Loving Day ❤️#lovingday
